There are not many books that make me cry but this one definitely did!

I was so happy to be reunited with the characters from Hope House. Lauren and Becky are still trying to run the orphanage on limited funds while supporting even more children. Both women are still being pursued by their men but both have been hurt in relationships and are reluctant in the romance department.

These young women are so strong in their fight for these kids and so many in their community.

Thanks so much to netgalley

A baby on the Doorstep by Rachel Wesson is an emotional read. One that will tug on your heartstrings from all the trials and tribulations faced during The Great Depression. One that will tug on your heartstrings from all the trials and tribulations faced during The Great Depression. At the heart of it all stands Hope House, an orphanage run by Lauren and Becky, both still young women themselves. While this is a fiction story, there are many historical facts that run parallel. It was heartbreaking to hear a part of our history that is not often talked about. The relocation of thousands of people who lived on the mountain in Virginia had their homes taken from them and their land was seized in order to create a national park. So many displaced families now homeless, with very little money, young children they can now no longer care for properly and having to make a terrible choice of letting their babies go and hopefully be welcomed into the fold at Hope House instead of a county home. Here is where this story begins, when a father makes a tough choice having to leave his baby daughter, Maisie, on the doorstep of Hope House, with a letter promising to return one day.

Even though Lauren and Becky struggled to make ends meet so they can take care of the children in their care I could see how hard they worked themselves to ensure the safety of the children. Both women have troubled painful pasts and have a hard time trusting men even while having a good man in their life wanting to help. Lauren and Becky are both strong but damaged and I loved seeing how they both grow in the story and their passion they have for the orphanage even while facing money problems and a possible eviction looming over their heads.

I do want to preface this all by saying, I did have a little bit of a difficult time within the first 20 pages or so keeping up with every character in the story and I felt like the beginning of their stories was already told previously, so I did a little search and realized this is a second book in a series. The first book, A Home for Unloved Orphans, was on my TBR this entire time, Ugh! I am definitely going to have to read it next. Although this is technically the second book, it can be read on its own, but I would probably suggest picking up the first book as well.

This is a truly beautiful story and one I am glad to have read.

This is a historical fiction set in Virginia through the Depression era.

The main character is a strong willed woman which I love to read about in books.

The book hits some hard hitting topic matters but it doesn't take away from the main story.

The community as a whole takes care of each other.

The story flows well with great characters.

Highly recommend.

This is an emotive rollercoaster read set in the Depression of the 1930s and making it very clear what happened to so many people during this era. I hadn't realised this was the second book in a series until I'd finished it and I have to say that not reading the first book didn't detract from my enjoyment of this one.

Lauren Greenwood is endeavouring to run Hope House, an orphanage, but money is tight for everyone and for children who have no one else that is even worse. She is struggling to keep food on the table for all the orphans and to keep paying the mortgage on the home where they live. The story starts with a baby girl secretly being left on the doorstep by her father after the family lost their home and were unsure how they could keep her safe. He leaves a note telling them her name, Maisie, and promising to return for her.

This story tells how Lauren and Becky work together to look after Maisie and the children in their care with the support of some great friends. The two women are strong, supporting each other and caring for the children but the depression is making it difficult. There are more children in need of succour, less sources of funding, and a danger of them losing their home as part of the national park developments. With unrest in Germany adding to the mix, this is a moving story of caring, battling for the less fortunate and romance, a beautifully told story that keeps you guessing and turning the pages. I thoroughly enjoyed reading it and suggest you keep the tissues handy if you read it.

With several potential romances, lots of surprises - especially in a court case - this is an enthralling read I have no hesitation in highly recommending. Thanks to Bookouture and NetGalley for my copy of this book which I have voluntarily read and honestly reviewed.

A Baby on the Doorstep is a heart-wrenching story about helplessness, kindness, and endurance.

The book takes the reader into these women and children's everyday lives; the pain of illness, abuse, and abandonment, and the fear of losing the roof over their heads once again.

A side plot encompasses the beginning of what would eventually be the Holocaust, with two German children coming to the home after managing to escape the nazis. It is very touching and alarming to see what happened not that long ago.

The characters are lovely, especially the children, and there is a little bit of romance in the background and even a special appearance of Eleanor Roosevelt. After all the suffering, a happy ending wraps everything up.

A Baby on the Doorstep is an emotional and inspiring read that made me feel blessed and thankful for everything, and mainly everyone, I have in my life.

The Struggles of the mountain people, the prejudices against them, the injustices done to them by the government and their intense love for family. They worked hard and when there was no more work and they lost their homes, they gave up their children to keep them safe.

We first met Lauren and Becky in Rachel Wesson's first book, "The Home for Unloved Orphans". The story continues as they take on new children and new challenges. The depression is hard on everyone and even the business's in town find it hard to stay open when no one has money to spend.

While they are fighting to find the finances to stay open, the find they now must fight to keep their orphanage and the land. This brings in the story of the building of the Shenandoah state park where many mountain people were forced from their homes.

It also touches on the rise of Hitler in Germany and how the beginning of the reign of terror for the Jewish in Germany. Two Jewish children are left at the orphanage by Lauren's fiancée, Edward, their uncle, while he goes to Berlin to try and convince their mother to leave.

There are other challenges both personal and with the orphanage that Lauren and Becky need to work out. Will they be able to win in court and keep the orphanage? Will Edward return from Berlin?

This book was a joy to read. I cannot believe the courage and fortitude people had during the hard times of the depression. It was a blessing how they worked together to help each other.

I would definitely recommend this book. It is a great read.

Thanks to Rachel Wesson, Bookouture, and NetGalley for allowing me to read a copy in return for an honest review.

I thought that Edward was an absolutely perfect match for her as he proved himself to be just as fearless and selfless when he set off to Nazi Germany to rescue his own family members and uncover the crimes committed by a new regime. There are so many important issues raised in this wonderful story, I could go on and on, but I don't want to give any more spoilers. So, I'll just say this: read it, you won't regret it. Meticulously researched and so very well-written, this book is a true gem for all fans of the historical fiction genre! ...more

I loved this story. Spending time with Lauren, Becky, Nanny Kat, Edward, Big Will, the orphans and all their friends was wonderful. Watching them support each other to survive and make ends meet was inspiring. This historical fiction story is full of strong, stubborn, caring, sacrificing women. Rachel Wesson has written a well-plotted story that is full of hard hitting, but accurate situations. Several themes were heartbreaking and I was crossing everything that could be crossed that things would turn out. These characters, that lived a simple life, were able to take on many others, making it a David and Goliath story at times, but truth will prevail. One of the major plots was a difficult time in US history and one that I was not aware of. It was heartbreaking to hear about the forced relocation of thousands of people who lived on the mountain in Virginia had their homes taken from them and their land was seized in order to create the Shenandoah National Park. This was a major part of this story. I recommend this story to those who enjoy historical fiction, especially that set in the U.S. I am looking forward to another installment of the Hope House series. I was gifted a copy of this book upon request. The rating and opinions shared are my own.

A Baby on the Doorstep is the sequel to A Home for Unloved Orphans. We catch up with former heiress Lauren Greenwood and her orphanage. The Depression continues to impact on everyday life and now a national park is being created which threatens the local community and ultimately Lauren's home as well.
This is a book that pulls at the heartstrings. So many of the characters have suffered from poverty or cruelty so our emotions are instantly affected. Lauren is like a lioness, fiercely protecting her cubs. She is a staunch friend and has given up a great deal to enjoy her freedom. Lauren subverts the patriarchy of the time by being independent and, despite her developing romance with Edward, is only prepared for relationships based on equality.
There are plenty of little historical details which add an air of authenticity, such as references to the Lindbergh baby kidnapping and the sinking of the Morro Castle. I also enjoyed the plot of Edward visiting Germany to see his Jewish relatives and rescuing the children against the backdrop of Nazi persecution.
However, Becky and Lauren's continued rejection of their suitors became a little tiresome. I also found it was stretching my credulity a little far with the number of guests that kept being drawn to the house depsite the miniscule income. The ending felt very unrealistic but was certainly dramatic and enjoyable to read!
A Baby on the Doorstep is an emotional book that cleverly uses historical detail to bring the engaging characters to life.

Lauren and Becky are running the orphanage but time hasn't be easy. It's still Depression so taking care of the children isn't easy and other setbacks are coming and going. New children, new friends but also new hardships. But with love and hard work they manage until.....

Loved the story! This book has all the elements of what makes a great story line...Intrigue, romance, strong characters, and a beautiful setting. There are many conflicts and so many dreams, just waiting to be fulfilled and Lauren and her friend and co-owner of Hope House work hard to make the children's dreams happen while tending to their day to day care. There are struggles to keep food on the table and demons to fight but these two are up to the task.
One of the best books I've read in a long

This story is set during the great depression in the Blue Ridge Mountains. Lauren and Becky run an orphanage called Hope House. They face many struggles as they try to keep the orphanage open and keep from being evicted. This was a beautiful and heartwarming story. Thank you to Rachel Wesson and Bookouture for the opportunity to read this book. I received a complimentary copy of this book through NetGalley. The views and opinions expressed in this review are entirely my own.

Thoughtful

The author did much research in th Depression and the building of the Blue Ridge Parkway and into the workers and misplaced families including health problems and prejudices against various members of society. The book is a tear-jerker as the many problems facing the people who live and work there are discussed.. I enjoyed reading this book and fully recommend it even though reading g it was a bit tedious at times.

Gripping and heartbreaking

I loved this so much. All of the children and friends of Hope House had me laughing and crying both. The persistence and dedication shown by Lauren and Becky drew me in and caused real emotional turmoil as they faced challenges. I would give it 4 stars, but, as in the first book, I found an anachronism. The author needs to do better research on time periods and inventions. But overall this was an excellent and informative read.

Rachel Wesson was born in Kilkenny, Ireland but considers herself to be from the capital, Dublin as that's where she spent most of her life. Her dad brought Rachel and her two sisters out every Saturday to give their mother a break. He took them to the library and for ice-cream after. It took a long time for her sisters to forgive her for the hours she spent choosing her books!

She grew up driving everyone nuts asking them questions about what they did during the War or what side they were on in the 1916 rising etc. Finally her Granny told her to write her stories down so people would get the pleasure of reading them. In fact what Granny meant was everyone would get some peace while Rachel was busy writing!
When not writing, or annoying relatives, Rachel was reading. Her report cards from school commented on her love of reading especially when she should have been learning. Seems you can't read Great Expectations in Maths. After a doomed love affair and an unpleasant bank raid during which she defended herself with a tea tray, she headed to London for a couple of years. (There is a reason she doesn't write romance!). She never intended staying but a chance meeting with the man of her dreams put paid to any return to Ireland. Having spent most of her career in the City, she decided something was missing. Working in the City is great but it's a young person's dream. Having three children you never see isn't good for anyone. So she packed in the job and started writing. Thanks to her amazing readers, that writing turned into a career far more exciting and rewarding than any other.
Rachel lives in Surrey with her husband and three children, two boys and a girl. When not reading, writing or watching films for "research" purposes, Rachel likes to hang out with her family. She also travels regularly back home - in fact she should have shares in BA and Aerlingus.
